Who Is This Site For?
This web site is intended for use by residents of Manitoba's
North Eastman Health Region. Development of this site has
been supported by MBTelehealth and
the WRHA.
It has been developed to help you in your pursuit of knowledge
and will focus on Type 2 Diabetes and its related issues.
Learning about diabetes and how to manage the disease allows
you to live your own life. This takes time, patience and help
from your diabetes healthcare team. Management is a team effort.
You are the most active person on the team, but you are not
alone – we’re here to help. Other members of your
diabetes healthcare team may include:
- Your doctor
- Your diabetes educators (nurse, dietitian, social worker,
pharmacist, or other health care professional)
- Doctors with specialized training ( e.g.; endocrinologist,
ophthalmologist, podiatrist etc....)
Get to know your team and meet with them regularly as you
might need to make changes to your treatment plan and medications
over time.

Research
findings from the Diabetes Control and Complication Trial
(DCCT) and the United Kingdom Prospective Diabetes Study
(UKPDS) have shown that keeping blood glucose levels as
close to normal as possible reduces long-term complications.
The body parts most commonly affected by high blood glucose
levels include the heart, limbs, eyes, kidney, and nervous
system. Even small changes in blood glucose control were
shown to reduce the risk for complications. Controlling
high blood pressure and blood fats was also beneficial.
While we know how to prevent many complications, it
is estimated that 80 to 85 percent of people with diabetes
don’t engage in optimal self-care. Having access
to resources and feeling empowered to take charge of
their health will help people with diabetes manage their
disease through exercise, diet control, medications (when
needed) and regular blood glucose level testing.
